UPDATE: Police Chase Ends When Car Crashes Into School Bus

Driver fled Central Marin Police Authority officers through Kentfield and Greenbrae to southbound Highway 101 before striking school bus occupied by only the driver near the East Blithedale exit in Mill Valley.

8:30 p.m. - Corte Madera Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Peter Davis said fire crews were called to the scene at around 4:40 p.m. He said that when the school bus was hit by the Land Rover, it spun around and struck the guardrail, blasting right through it and becoming lodged between the guardrail and the soundwall.

Two individuals, the suspect and the school bus driver, were transported to Marin General Hospital with moderate and minor injuries, respectively, Davis said.

6:19 p.m. – Theresa Lohr told Patch that she witnessed the origins of the chase in downtown San Anselmo. Lohr said she was walking down San Anselmo Ave., having just come out of Comforts, when she heard a police officer yell and saw a man with dreadlocks run past her as the officer pursued him.

As the footchase continued, the suspect was dropping items into the street, Lohr said, and jump into a white Land Rover. "The police officer went up to the driver's side door and the driver fled, driving onto the sidewalk and swerving around another San Anselmo police car and fled down Sir Francis Drake Boulevard towards Highway 101," Lohr said.

A driver fleeing from police crashed into a school bus on southbound U.S. Highway 101 in Marin this afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash happened at about 4:50 p.m. near the East Blithedale Avenue exit.

CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said that a few minutes before the crash, the CHP received word that the Central Marin Police Authority was chasing a suspect on the highway.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed into the back of the school bus, he said.

The bus was not carrying any children and the bus driver was not injured, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene, he said. The bus was disabled in the crash and was blocking the No. 4 and 5 southbound lanes, Van Eckhardt said. The lanes were still blocked as of 5:30 p.m. but were expected to be cleared shortly.
