The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is an independent special district established by the Marin County Board of Supervisors in July 1999. It provides fire, rescue and paramedic services to the communities of Tamalpais Valley, Almonte, Homestead Valley, Alto, Strawberry, portions of Tiburon, and the City of Sausalito.</p> <p>The district operates three stations, and responds to more than 4,000 incidents per year. The district also provides paramedic service to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Beach, and the Muir Woods National Monument, and a regional rescue unit that serves all of the above areas, the Tiburon peninsula, and the Golden Gate Bridge area.</p>

Firefighters are specialized in a wide-range of skills in addition to firefighting and emergency medicine, including fire investigations, high-angle cliff rescue, Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams, CPR and first aid instruction.</p> <p>Mill Valley's heavily wooded canyons and the steep terrain of the community have the department on constant alert for the threat of a major wild fire. The department's two stations are manned with seven fire fighters on duty and 24 line personnel, using four pieces of equipment on a shift: two engines with 500 gallons of water each, one wildland fire engine and one command truck.</p> <p>The main fire station is located at the City of Mill Valley's Public Safety Building on Hamilton Drive.</p>

It operates three stations, and responds to more than 4,000 incidents per year. The district also provides paramedic service to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Beach and the Muir Woods National Monument.</p> <p>A seven-member board of directors governs the district and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month.</p>
