Mill Valley Fire Department - Main Station

First organized in 1890 as a volunteer force, the Mill Valley Fire Department has come a long way from its daysMore of beating fires out with wet potato sacks and an old 1924 American La France. Firefighters are specialized in a wide-range of skills in addition to firefighting and emergency medicine, including fire investigations, high-angle cliff rescue, Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams, CPR and first aid instruction.</p> <p>Mill Valley's heavily wooded canyons and the steep terrain of the community have the department on constant alert for the threat of a major wild fire. The department's two stations are manned with seven fire fighters on duty and 24 line personnel, using four pieces of equipment on a shift: two engines with 500 gallons of water each, one wildland fire engine and one command truck.</p> <p>The main fire station is located at the City of Mill Valley's Public Safety Building on Hamilton Drive.</p>

The Marin County Fire Department's Throckmorton Ridge station responds to wildland fires on the southern and west MarinMore coast, Mt. Tamalpais and the urban-interface areas above Mill Valley. The department protects Muir Beach, Muir Woods and the unincorporated areas surrounding Mill Valley. It also responds to fires at the Muir Woods National Monument and the Marin Municipal Watershed. The Throckmorton Ridge station was rebuilt in 2006 and has won awards for architecture and energy efficiency. It is manned by two firefighters in the winter and four in the summer.

Southern Marin Fire Protection District: Tamalpais Valley

The Tamalpais Valley station of the Southern Marin Fire Protection District serves the areas of Tamalpais Valley,More Homestead Valley and Almonte. The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is an independent special district established by the Marin County Board of Supervisors in July 1999. It provides fire, rescue and paramedic services to the communities of Tamalpais Valley, Almonte, Homestead Valley, Alto, Strawberry, portions of Tiburon, and the City of Sausalito.</p> <p>The district operates three stations, and responds to more than 4,000 incidents per year. The district also provides paramedic service to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Beach, and the Muir Woods National Monument, and a regional rescue unit that serves all of the above areas, the Tiburon peninsula, and the Golden Gate Bridge area.</p>

The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is an independent special district established in July of 1999 toMore provide fire, rescue and paramedic services to the communities of Tamalpais Valley, Almonte, Homestead Valley, Alto, Strawberry, approximately 1/3 of the town of Tiburon, and the city of Sausalito.</p> <p>The district, which has 52 full-time employees, covers 11.5 square miles, approximately 27,700 people and more than 14,100 homes and commercial structures. It operates three stations, and responds to more than 4,000 incidents per year. The district also provides paramedic service to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Beach and the Muir Woods National Monument.</p> <p>A seven-member board of directors governs the district and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month.</p>

Vegetation Management

Vegetation Management is a special program set up by the city council to reduce the chance of wild fires. Its servicesMore include maintenance of paved roads and city-owned land, the creation of buffer zones along ridge lines and the establishment of fuel breaks. The program also removes dead oak trees that may present a fire hazard. Furthermore, it maintains a special hotline that is available day or night if you have any questions. Vegetation Management is located inside the fire department on Hamilton Drive.
