Well I was with you as far as lack of jobs, overcrowded infrastructure and of course no water forRead More future growth. The last one especially resonates a need for responsible action by our BOS and assorted City Councils to simply say no to massive new development. There should be a responsibility to those already living here both rich and low income & all in between close to mandatory conservation in this drought to protect our ability to survive and protect all our investments in our homes and the environment. Politicians pandering for votes and re-election funds should not b allowed to represent the electorate. They are tainted by special interests. If affordable housing is needed it should be fairly apportioned and then voted by each city or county. Local needs should be controlled by local citizens. No more ABAG nonsensical rationale for Sacramento socialism to destroy what is left of Calif.

The only reason our legislators push this feel-good legislation is for re-election. There is mostRead More definitely a concerted effort from the top down to coerce us into givingup our liberties. The only folks who believe this garbage are the one that refuse to think for themselves. 3per makes an excellent point in regard to the county's methods to estimate green house gases. Can we analyze some non-biased data before this is crammed down our throats? Maybe the Golden Gate bridge district should stop extorting vehicle commuters to pay for a failing and polluting ferry system. But alas, the push to get us out of cars...

Thank you, Amy. I've also had a very hard time figuring out how to confront this issue. It isRead More difficult when it becomes apparent that it just isn't nonsense anymore, it's dangerous nonsense. People will literally die if the anti-vaxx crowd is successful at convincing people not to vaccinate their kids. Potentially a lot of people. When you combine that with the stupidity, outright lies and paranoia displayed by celebrity spokes-people like Jenny McCarthy it becomes really hard to maintain ones composure (oops, I just lost mine). I suppose it's best to treat everyone as one would treat a good friend who is skeptical of modern medicine and scared for their children. As far as the black helicopter people go, I'm not sure what can be done to convince them, since they invariably believe that any data not conforming to their beliefs must the due to a conspiracy of some kind. I've known a lot of publicly funded scientists over the years, and the idea that they could all somehow be conspiring to harm public health in order to enrich corporations is ludicrous and insulting. Part of the problem is that as a result of reasonable skepticism of expert opinion, many people have decided that there is no such thing. Or, even worse, they pick people who have zero expertise but who are good at manipulating their fears. So now we have a huge population of scientifically illiterate people who no longer trust doctors, but are willing to put all their faith in internet scam artists like the "Health Ranger". This can't end well.

TB is on the rise from the "out of county" rich kids at our colleges also. TB was eradicated in the U.S. 30 years ago but now it is back and we no longer give imunizations for it.

Careful with that "brain health registry", registration leads to confiscation! ButRead More seriously, I would caution anyone who owns a firearm or wishes to own one in the future from registering as having an unhealthy brain, as these types of lists, such as those being created in our nationalized healthcare ( where they are making doctors ask if there are firearms in the home) can easily be utilized during future legislation or executive order as a broad classification tool for denying individuals a right to own firearms in their quest to begin disarming the population. Returning veterans will also be catalogued and flagged if any mention of PTSD is made. If any health agency needed subjects for a legitimate study, they would just need to visit the many nursing homes and adult communities around us. Don't say you weren't warned.

I am in favor of frugal spending. Agreed. However, the libraries are not antiquated or nostalgic.Read More They are a thriving source of education and connection in our communities. Within the last week I met two women (separately), who use the library as their only internet or computer source. Neither owned a computer or a cell phone. These were working adult women. They also use the library for books and news. Personally, I use the library frequently for books, movies and connecting with others in my community. There are many events & discussion groups available.
novato 3per March 1, 2014 at 09:45 am
These women are an exception and likely rely on the library by choice or principle, not necessity,Read More as I'm quite sure the government offers free or low cost internet and cell phone service to keep tabs on EVERYONE. Even jobless illegal aliens find a way to get ahold of pay as you go cell plans and use the internet for email, craigslist, etc. Having said that, I like the idea of the library for community education and would like to see more storytime readings for children.
Concerned Citizen March 1, 2014 at 04:39 pm
The library is a measure of a society that values access to education for all. I use ebooks at leastRead More once a week. There are many that use the library because of a lack of alternatives. We should use libraries for children to research and read as opposed to the current model of video causing social non-interaction. That aside the argument made of how to support and fund our library is unfair. It is time for all who vote to also take part in what they vote for. It is patently unfair to tax one group by proxy. I would gladly pay for all to have access. But I'm no longer comfortable paying for those that ask me to pay while not having the same obligation. The argument that homeowners are a higher income class is not applicable in Novato. Many homeowners fall into the income bracket as renters. I don't believe there are those who couldn;t afford 50 cents a month per person. That is what it would cost for our 52000+ residents vs the parcel tax levied on a few for the roughly 9000 parcels in town. Libraries are different than schools but that formula should be reconsidered. The argument that good schools help support higher property values is applicable. However the only persons that should have a say any parcel tax should be those with a parcel. One parcel one vote. If you want to have a supplemental tax to support our schools I'm in. But same as libraries if you have kids in the system you should pay at least as much as you are asking me to pay without a child in the system. One vote should equal one fixed dollar contribution. I wonder how many would be so free with my dollars if they had to put their money where their vote is?

Now if the municipalities would enforce disabled parking, and doctors would not hand out plaquesRead More like candy, things also would improve. I see people in trucks put into a disabled parking place, jump out, and walk without difficulty away from the vehicle. It is frustrating to not be able to park close to the grocery store, but when you go into a store that has ride around shopping carts no one is using them, but all the disabled parking is filled. The Hamilton Safeway parking lot is an example. I have had to give up and go home because of this. It is better to keep persons with disabilities independent, living at home, working, contributing rather than in institutions.

I cite the reports of the pet industry simply to show that it would not be unreasonable for a 3-1Read More ratio of people to want to allow favorable dog rules in the GGNRA, however balancing the needs of the local flora and fauna with those of nature loving dog owners is really what the discussion needs to be about. Number 1 rule - be responsible and show respect for your neighbor and others on the trail with you.Read More You do not own the trail any more than I do. Just because you pay taxes to keep the Federal land up, doesn't mean you own more rights to a trail than I do. I always keep my dog on leash except in a designated dog park area.
