National Parks: What's Open and Closed on Thanksgiving Weekend

Find out what is open or closed during Thanksgiving weekend in the Golden Gate National Parks. Muir Woods shuttle will be running, Marine Headlands will be closed.

Here is a quick list of the facilities that will will be closed or remain open on Thanksgiving and over the holiday weekend. For more information visit www.nps.gov/goga

WHAT WILL BE OPEN:

Muir Woods National Monument remains open every day

  • There is a new holiday Muir Woods Shuttle service, which will operate for the whole weekend. How better to digest the holiday than with a walk among these ancient trees with the added beauty of fall colors around them?  The shuttle will run from November 28 through December 1.   • Join us at the Woods on Sunday, December 1 from 1-3PM, for Welcome Back Salmon, a special event to mark the turning of the seasons and alert the offshore salmon that it is almost time to return to their home stream.

The MUNI 76 bus service between San Francisco and the Marin Headlands will operate on Thanksgiving as well asSaturday and Sunday. Check www.511.org for details.

All park trails (not closed for construction or restoration) remain open for you stretch your legs, work off the Thanksgiving feast and enjoy crisp fall weather

Battery Townsley will be open for tours on Sunday, December 1, 12-4PM.

Nike Missile Site will be closed on Thanksgiving, but open 12:30-3:30PM, Friday and Saturday.

Point Bonita lighthouse is not open on Thursdays, but will be open 12:30-3:30PM, Saturday-Monday.

Fort Point NHS is closed on Thursdays this time of year, but it will be open 10-5PM Friday-Sunday.

WHAT WILL BE CLOSED:

Muir Beach will continue to be closed due to construction and restoration work. It is expected to reopen mid-December. The local businesses in the area, including Pelican Inn, continue be open.

The Marin Headlands Visitor Center will be closed on Thanksgiving.

The Marine Mammal Center will be closed only on Thanksgiving Day.

Nike Missile Site will be closed on Thanksgiving, but open 12:30-3:30PM, Friday and Saturday.

Fort Point NHS is closed on Thursdays this time of year, but it will be open 10-5PM Friday-Sunday.

Presidio Visitor Center will be closed on Thanksgiving, but open 10-4PM, Friday-Sunday.

Though Alcatraz is closed on Thanksgiving Day, a special Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering will be held on the island that day. Go to www.alcatrazcruises.com for information and tickets.
