Historical Society's Annual Walk Into History Starts at Home of the 'Father of Mill Valley'
The 2013 history walk around Cascade Canyon will start on 565 Throckmorton Ave. at the entrance to 'Burlwood,' 119-year-old mansion that was once the home of Joseph Eastland, sometimes referred to as the 'Father of Mill Valley.'
The 2013 annual walk into history, hosted by the Mill Valley Historical Society will consist of a loop around Cascade Canyon. Perhaps the highlight of the walk will be a tour on the grounds of 565 Throckmorton Ave. This 119-year-old mansion was the onetime home of Joseph Eastland, sometimes referred to as the “father of Mill Valley”
Joseph Eastland was the President of the Tamalpais Land and Water Company, an offshoot of a bank in San Francisco that had acquired the old Mexican Land Grant of William Richardson, who had then passed it on the Samuel Throckmorton.
Eastland acquired 7 acres of land that was bounded by Cascade, Throckmorton, and Cornwall. For many years, his was the only home on this site. Today over a dozen houses have grown as his lots were subdivided. The original home, known as Burlwood, was constructed in 1893. It was a 3 story, 22 bedroom, English Tudor-style home. It was of the first homes in Mil Valley to have electricity and a telephone. There was a steam heat-generating building, a cottage, two tennis courts, and a small lake that was created by a small dam on Cascade Creek. Eastland would only enjoy the fruits of this home for one year, for he died in 1894. His wife and family moved away, and the home then passed through many families over the next 100+ Years.
