Whiz Kid of the Week:
School: Fifth grader,
Accomplishment: Few could ever forget that the 100th edition of the Dipsea Race was conquered by 8-year-old Reilly Johnson in 2010. Now a plaque on the Dipsea Steps will make sure no one forgets.
Johnson crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 31 seconds last year, winning by seven seconds. Last Saturday, Johnson and her parents Wendy and Hal were on hand to mark the installation of the plaque on the third flight of Dipsea Stairs to honor her achievement.
“I’m very excited to have my name on the stairs,” Johnson said. “It was very exciting because it was the 100th and I was the youngest ever to win.”
Key to Awesomeness: Johnson held off perennial contender Melody-Ann Schultz of Ross by a mere seven seconds last year. “I’m a very fast sprinter,” she said. “So I figured I could probably outsprint her if I had to."
