What Did You Think of the Olympics Opening Ceremony?

Did you watch? Did the tape delay bother you? Did you find it entertaining? What was your favorite part?

While the rest of the world was watching the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympic Games, Americans were left in the dark.

The Associated Press reported Friday that NBC drew some criticism for failing to stream the opening ceremonies online.

NBC Universal announced it would stream live every athletic competition from this year's games but had never intended to show the opening and closing ceremonies except on tape delay.

Viewers on the west coast were not allowed to watch the ceremonies until long after the day ended in London.

AP quoted NBC Sports spokesman Christopher McCloskey as saying the ceremonies "are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large prime-time audiences that gather together to watch them."

Twitter was aflutter with complaints regarding the situation and provided links for the BBC live broadcast of the event.

Piers Morgan, a popular host on CNN, tweeted details about the ceremony, including this tweet: "Laughable that America is yet to start watching the Olympic ceremony on TV. Seriously."

In 2008, NBC also waited to broadcast the opening ceremonies in Beijing amid complaints, although the buzz from China helped create a television audience of 34.9 million people, the largest opening ceremony audience in 12 years. The countdown to the start of the Ceremony was marked by 96 children standing around the Stadium with popping balloons, followed by the Olympic Bell ringing in the official start of the Opening Ceremony.

The highly anticipated Opening Ceremony began with an imagined trip along London's iconic river, the Thames, from its source in Gloucestershire to the Olympic Stadium in east London.

Also during the Ceremony, the Olympic Flame made its way along the Thames in a boat piloted by David Beckham.

At the heart of the Opening Ceremony is the Athletes' Parade where teams enter the Stadium in alphabetical order, with Team GB concluding the Parade.

I came across that little traffic circle on a Saturday, a few weeks ago. Two of us approaching fromRead More different directions yielded to the car already in the circle, just as we were supposed to do, and it worked great! Of course, more hardcore engineering may be needed to corral users who don't understand the design, or scofflaws who imagine that painted "yield" symbols and lane markings don't apply to them. I believe I heard that step is in the works. Traffic circles and traffic-calming roundabouts are becoming common all over the country, because they improve traffic flow and reduce speeding and crashes. I guess I can't hit the enter button because that submits the post so from now on (until they fixRead More the problem), all of my posts will be one paragraph. What Angelina did was her choice, based on the multi-billion dollar per cancer industry, and by the people that like do unnecessary surgeries to line their pockets. Ask one of those male doctors if he is willing to have his testicles removed "just in case" he might get testicular cancer in the future. I'll bet that they would laugh at anyone who proposed that question. There are many ways that people can take care of their bodies to prevent cancer, like taking vitamin D, magnesium, selenium, turmeric and many more anti-inflammatory herbs. Also diet and environmental factors play a role in the pre-disposition to get cancer. In most cases, genes only play about a 5% role in a chance of inheriting or contracting cancer. But this big business of cancer research doesn't want hear about anything else besides expensive pharmaceutical drugs and surgery, anything else would threaten their business model. Thanks Jim W. for your reply and explaining things to us. I look forward to a new Patch where peopleRead More are more considerate of other's opinions. I hope the new filters get rid of the hacker/trolls. And by the way, if you don't port over the comments about the transgender shower sharing article that I glanced at last night, you will be doing all of us a favor !

Thanks Rico. You make great points. We had a bit of a tech glitch in that some content from earlierRead More this week did not migrate over yet to the new sites - but it'll all be there soon. And yes, we'll have more info on how to navigate the site. I'll direct you here with any specific questions for now: https://patchsupport.zendesk.com/home But if that doesn't cover it or if you'd prefer to ask me, feel free - happy to help. And that goes for anyone out there with a question about how to get around on the new site.
