Tam Trounces Lincoln Behind Surging O-Line

Emerging group give QB Black time to throw and opens lanes for RB Huffman in 34-8 win.

With a mere 17-man roster going into Saturday's game against Lincoln High of San Francisco, Tam High football coach Kevin Goyer knew he'd have to rely on the "do more with less" approach.

The Red-tailed Hawks came through with a 34-8 trouncing of the Mustangs behind an emerging offensive line that both protected quarterback Graeme Black and opened up loads of running lanes for running back Mac Huffman.

"It's been steady progress for the whole offensive line," Goyer said. "They were facing some guys who were bigger and stronger, but they kept working their techniques, and that's what we've been focusing on in practice."

The Red-tailed Hawks (2-0) scored five touchdowns on the day, jumping out to a 20-0 halftime lead and only giving up a late touchdown to the Mustangs. Black completed 11 of 16 passes for 132 yards and ran for the opening score on a 9-yard jaunt. Sophomore Jonny Wachtel led the team in receiving yards with five catches for 78 yards.

Running back Mac Huffman had plenty of holes to choose from, rushing for 130 yards on 21 carries. He scored on a 14-yard blast in the second quarter and a 10-yard run in the third quarter.

Goyer highlighted the play of the entire offensive line, including senior and returning starter Charles McMahon at tackle, fellow senior tackle Jacob Garrard, junior guards Kevin Le and Samuel Revas and center Williams Haight.

Le led the defense with two sacks and four tackles, while Brian Scott racked up 13 tackles and Jon Finkelstein had 11 tackles.

"By and large, I'm pretty happy," Goyer said.

The Red-tailed Hawks travel to Sonoma Valley High for a non-league battle Friday at 7:30pm at Arnold Field.
