Soccer: Tam 2, Redwood 0

Red-tailed Hawks get another goal from Melendez in route to a shutout in MCAL play.

The Tam High soccer team continued its hot start with a 2-0 win over Redwood Wednesday, controlling the run of play for most of the game and staying in prime position for the playoffs.

The Red-tailed Hawks (6-1-3, 2-0-1) dictated the tempo early, with Alon Sacks taking a ball out wide in the 10th minute and crossing it over a Giants center back. Sophomore Tesfaye Paine took the pass and ran right through both center backs and knocked in a shot from just inside the 18-yard box.

Redwood pushed back for the rest of the first half, according to Tam coach Dustin Nygaard.

"Redwood got their composure back, and it was back and forth until halftime," he said.

But the Red-tailed Hawks continued to get the ball out wide and make the extra pass, and 18 minutes into the second half, junior striker Minho Kang got the ball in the middle of the field and passed it to junior Julien Melendez down the left side of the field. Melendez beat one Giant defender and drilled a shot inside the far post for his ninth goal in 10 games.

"Obviously, he's not a secret anymore, so teams are trying to clamp down on him a bit," Nygaard said. "He might not be getting as many looks as he has been, but when he does, he's still able to put them into the back of the net."
