Jetton Has to Work Hard to Earn Trip to NCS

Tam heavyweight rallies in the third period to finish third in the MCAL wrestling meet and keep his season alive along with Pablo Cortez and Oliver Duler.

Needing a win to earn automatic qualification into the North Coast Section Championships next week, heavweight figured to have caught a break when he drew Drake's Dylan Sayge, a wrestler he'd pinned earlier in the day, in the third-place match at the Marin County Athletic League meet Saturday.

Turns out Jetton had to battle harder than expected to earn his trip to Newark Memorial High.

Jetton trailed Sayge in the third period before rallying to secure third place with a 4-3 win and join and Oliver Duler as Red-tailed Hawks who were able to extend their seasons Saturday.

"The day went great," assured Tam coach Andre Salinas, who also has three alternates for the NCS meet. "I've coached long enough to kinda know what to expect. But we did have one 'bad' surprise today."

That occurred when 137-pounder dislocated his elbow during the competition. That ended his day, but Salinas reported afterward that his wrestler is doing fine.

Cortez did better than fine Saturday. He gave defending champion Christian Lazarraga quite a battle in the 105 finals.

But for the second year in a row, Cortez came up short, losing 5-2, and had to settle for second.

"Pablo has been injured most of the year," Salinas noted. "He's wrestling strong now at the end of the year."

Also going to Newark Memorial next week will be Duler, who finished fourth in his weight class but caught a break when one of the top three announced he would be unable to wrestling at NCS.

Duler was pinned by San Marin's Travis Roberts in 4:16 in the third-place match.

Terra Linda edged Marin Catholic for the team title.
