Boys' Water Polo: Tam 14, San Marin 5

Red-tailed Hawks cruise past San Marin, their 10th win in their last 11 games, and maintain a tie for top MCAL seed.

Led by goal scoring machine Max Sieck, the Tam High boys water polo team continued its strong campaign with a dominating victory over visiting San Marin.

Sieck, a senior meter-man (hole-set post), tallied four goals against the Mustangs, pushing his season total to 79. He continued to prove that he is lethal from anywhere in the pool.

"Max is our Dirk Nowitzki," said Tam coach Bob Kustel. "He is like a center who can score in the post, but can also step out and hit the corner three. He can score from anywhere."

Only halfway into the season, Sieck has already shattered the school's record for career goals, set by Rob Parnow, at 149, while Sieck has 180 goals and still counting.

The team is also enjoying unprecedented success, posting an 11-2 record while making a strong run at a conference championship.

"In nine years of coaching, this is the best team yet," Kustel said. "This is a very good group of guys, and they are extremely fun and easy to coach."

The team limited the Mustangs to five goals and has been stingy on defense all year. Lockdown defender Devon Miller-Gowan has been a major cog in the coach's defensive schemes. Krustel routinely assigns Miller-Gowan with guarding the oppositions' best player.

"[Devon] is a terrific shutdown defender," said Kustel. "In the two games we lost, we only lost by four goals total."

The Red-tailed Hawks have their eyes squarely set on an October 21st match-up against Drake. The Pirates have been the cream of the crop in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) and have beaten Tam in eight of their previous nine meetings.

The Red-tailed Hawks are focused on the North Coast Section (NCS) playoffs but they know if they want a league title, the road will most likely go through San Anselmo.

Up Next: Tam hosts Berkeley High this afternoon, as well as conference foe Redwood next Tuesday.
