Senior Care: 6 Tips for Aging with Grace

Senior Care: 6 Tips for Aging with Grace, written by Stan Lawson of Sequoia Senior Solutions

Remember the old commercial that said, “I’m not getting older. I’m getting better?” Getting older can mean getting better if you follow some simple rules of good health. In spite of major life altering events like the body’s physical changes, the deaths of loved ones and job loss, there are plenty of good events you can give yourself daily. This way you, too, can handle major changes, everyday stress and your body’s wear and tear. For one thing, as you age you have great opportunities to reinvent yourself by:

  • Discovering new things that you get pleasure from
  • Learning to adjust to your newest transformation
  • Keeping yourself physically fit and socially active
  • Being constantly linked with your community and the people you love the most
Aging comprises both negative and positive change: however, you can enjoy getting old if you understand what is going on with your body physically and mentally and take the necessary steps to retain your health.  For example, there are a number of transformations that take place within your body as you grow older. Your bones, muscles, skin and brain might act in a different manner, but do not let these changes catch you by surprise. Aging is a natural process which happens to everyone and aging in a graceful manner is possible for everyone.

Here are some tips for aging with grace:

  • It is extremely important to stay physically active by exercising on a regular basis.  Exercising can help you accomplish and maintain an ideal weight, which also can be significant in handling a number of health problems. It also helps you feel content with your physical appearance.
  • Be socially active by getting together with relatives, friends, colleagues and other people within your community. Solitude and loneliness are considered major barriers to aging gracefully. Surrounded by people who you can turn to for support is a safeguard against misery, adversity, and loss.
  • Other very important factors for healthy aging are eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption and quitting smoking. Eating a low-fat, low-cholesterol and high fiber diet which includes fruits and vegetables instead of junk food drastically improves the chances of aging with grace.
  • You need to go to your doctor on a regular basis. Regular checkups with your physician, dentist and optometrist help in the early detection of diseases that can be cured if found early.
  • Doctors recommend the proper amount of sleep, also a very important factor that shouldn’t be ignored. Sleeping on a proper time schedule and waking up early significantly improve a person’s health.  Adults need an average of eight hours of sleep to stay healthy.
  • Finally while taking care of yourself physically is very important, it is also very important to look after your mental health as well. Meditating, doing yoga or going regularly to your place of worship can help you meet the need to take care of your mental health.
By looking after yourself, you can find yourself aging with grace.
