Accomplishment: Lee was one of 14 people honored in January for "extraordinary advocacy of human and civil rights" as the Marin County Human Rights Commission held its 29th annual Marin Luther King Jr. humanitarian awards dinner. She received a $1,000 scholarship to go along with the honor, and though she hasn’t yet decided on a college, Lee plans to pursue chemical engineering and/or biomedical science.

But Lee is no mere bookworm. She transferred to Tam last year as a junior after two years at Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep in San Francisco. Counselor Grace Aviles, who nominated Lee for the MLK award, said she didn’t simply try to fit in, but quickly became a leader in both action and words.

Lee is a math whiz, having finished AP Calculus as a junior and filled up her schedule with advanced classes. She’s also peer tutor at Tam.

Outside the classroom, Lee was a first team all-Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) softball catcher as a junior and she continues to anchor the middle of the Red-tailed Hawks’ lineup and serves as a co-captain. In a coached by her father, Lee had two doubles and two singles, driving in four runs.

Key to Awesomeness: “She’s hard-working, persistent and dedicated, but she has this wonderful quality of humility and really giving back and reaching out to other students,” Aviles said.

“She breaks stereotypes,” she continued. “Stephanie really continues to educate her peers about integrity and human rights and giving each other respect before making judgments. She comes form such a wonderful place of giving.”
