Video & Slideshow: Every 15 Minutes at Tam

Tam High students participated in a public safety awareness program on Tuesday.

Tam hosted the Every 15 Minutes program on Tuesday morning in an effort to challenge high school students to think about drinking and driving, personal safety, and making responsible decisions, particularly how their decisions impact their family and friends.

The program kickd off this morning with the staging of a tragic car accident in the southbound lanes of Miller Ave. outside Tam. Law enforcement authorities from a host of local and regional agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Mill Valley Police Department, Mill Valley Fire Department, Tiburon Police and Twin Cities Police, responded to a 911 call at 10:40 a.m.

One student, McCall Hoyt, "died" in the crash, and two others were injured. The driver of one of the cars, Jake Straus, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The program will reconvene Wednesday morning for a school assembly that includes a presentation of a video of the accident and its aftermath, the sentencing of the drunk driver, a speaker who has had a personal experience with drunk driving, and the sharing of letters prepared by participating students and their parents.
