Truancy Not an Issue for Mill Valley Public Schools

The Mill Valley School District's truancy rate was dramatically lower than that of both the rest of Marin and all of California during the 2010-2011 school year, according to recently released state data.

When students at the 's six schools , teachers and administrators won't likely have to grappled with a problem facing districts in Marin and across the U.S.: truancy.

According to the California Department of Education's most recent data, the truancy rate for the Mill Valley district was .25 percent, a fraction of the rate in other parts of the county, in the 2010-2011 school year. By comparison, approximately 21 percent in the San Rafael Elementary School District, or around one in five students, were considered truant, which is an unexcused absence or tardy on three or more days.

During the same academic year, around 20 percent of Marin County students were truant compared to the state's average of nearly 30 percent.
