Tam Sports: Tennis Tops Terra Linda, Girls Water Polo Falls to Napa

Lady Hawks surge on the tennis courts with wins over Terra Linda and Redwood, while water polo squad drops tough loss to Napa High.

The girls tennis team came into its 2011 season knowing that it lost five productive seniors from a team that last year.

But it did so knowing that all of its top five players returned, with only one set to graduate in the spring.

“We’re solid and we’re pretty deep,” coach Bill Washauer said.

As its heads into a previously rained-out showdown with San Marin High today, the Lady Hawks stand atop the standings in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) knowing that it already has one win against heated rival Redwood High. The Hawks topped the Giants 6-3 on Thursday on the heels of a 9-0 trouncing of Terra Linda High.

“We’ll play them twice more and it’s going to be a war every time,” Washauer said of Redwood.

Juniors Chelsea Hayashi and Hilary Fazekas continue to lead the way as the top two singles players. The pair last November, with .

Washauer points to the team’s play earlier this month at the Girls Tennis Classic in Clovis, Calif., as a sign this could be another strong season for the Hawks. Tam won the consolation title at the tournament, defeating Monte Vista of Danville by a score of 6-1.

“There were some ridiculous teams down there,” he said.

The loss came despite a valiant effort by Sami Harvey and rest of the Tam team. Harvey scored six of Tam’s goals.  Ali Coppersmith assisted on several goals and scored one herself as did Pauline Hauzy.
