The  opens its doors after hours as MAD magazine Senior Editor uses insight and humor to perform The Joy of Censorship, his nationally acclaimed one-man show. No subject will be off-limits as Raiola reflects on the day’s most hotly debated first amendment issues.
The Joy of Censorship sheds light on the ongoing arguments over banned books, movie ratings, the FCC, the Patriot Act and the true meaning of obscenity. It also traces the colorful history of MAD Magazine, from renegade publisher Williams Gaines’ historic showdown with the U.S. Senate over comic book censorship to MAD’s emergence as a revolutionary satiric force. The program will conclude with a slide presentation spotlighting some of MAD’s most controversial and outrageous covers and articles, followed by a lively Q&A session.
If you go: The performance is free and open to the public, but is limited to those 15 and up. Registration is recommended and is available through the library's online events calendar or by calling 415-389-4292, x203. Adult language will be used. This is one of three fundraiser German culture Fests that are open to the public and are not to be missed! A polka band, traditional group dances in traditional dress, a menu of traditional foods and of course, excellent beers complete a fun-filled day for all ages. Bring out your lederhosen, wet your appetite for some delicious sausages and have fun.
If you go: The fest is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the SF, 30 Ridge Avenue in Mill Valley. Parking is extremely limited. There is simply not enough parking space on the mountain to accommodate the number of guests who attend our fundraisers, and many attendees who have parked along Panoramic Highway for our fests have been ticketed. Please use alternative ways of getting here whenever possible: hike in, take the bus, or carpool. See Directions for details. One of the ways most recommended is a 45-minute hike from Mill Valley up the Dipsea Steps.
