Students Land Poems in California Anthology

Quartet of Mill Valley Middle School students garner a spot in the 2011 edition of the California Poets in the Schools anthology.

Four students were ushered into a classroom last week for reasons unbeknownst to them, only to be greeted by their parents, counselors and Principal Anna Lazzarini.

“Don’t worry, it’s a good thing,” Lazzarini said.

Sixth graders Nicholas Brass, Irish Richards-Bailey, Sara Iisaka and Seth Eddy were all honored for having their poems published in Parting the Future, an anthology of poems by California Poets in the Schools. The 47-year-old organization connects published poets with youth of all ages to focus on the basics of writing and the creative process.

The students worked on the poetry project as fifth graders last year, with Richards-Bailey at  and the other three at .

“This is really a huge deal,” Lazzarini said. “So now we have published authors in house. We’re expecting great things from you guys.”
