School District Board Extends Superintendent's Contract

Trustees approved Superintendent Paul Johnson to remain on board until 2016.

After “an amazing year,” the Mill Valley School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved extending Superintendent Paul Johnson’s current term to June 30, 2016.

“The board is thrilled with Paul’s performance,” said trustee Steven Sell.

Johnson joined the district in 2011 with an annual salary of $195,000, which will remain unchanged in the new agreement. During his time at the helm he’s overseen a number of important accomplishments, board members said. The school facilities modernization project – with Edna Maguire wrapping up this winter – was the first one they mentioned.

Trustees also applauded Johnson for his work renewing the lease agreement with Ring Mountain Day School, which has rented the 70 Lomita Drive building from the Mill Valley School District since 2004, providing nearly $300,000 a year in revenue. The district looked into moving its administrative offices into that space to free up six additional classrooms to accommodate growing enrollment at Mill Valley Middle School. To the joy of Ring Mountain, Johnson determined “it was not a viable option for a district office.”

In addition, they recognized Johnson for his support of the November passage of Measure B, a $196 parcel tax that will combat the district’s looming budget deficit by preventing cuts to educational programs and retaining quality staff. It goes into effect for the 2013-2014 school year, and in the meantime Johnson implemented a “shared sacrifice” approach that included two district furlough days in 2012 – 2013.

Johnson also recently updated the district’s 2010 strategic plan, which was set to expire this year. The process involved two town hall-style meetings to gather public input, and more than 500 responses to a survey about the future of MVSD.

Any one of those accomplishments would have been considered a major success,” Sell said.

“Thank you Paul,” he said. “For everything.”
