Public Input Needed for Mill Valley School District Strategic Plan

The Mill Valley School District is updating its strategic plan, and will hold two town hall meetings to gather feedback from the public.

With the Mill Valley School District’s strategic plan due to expire at the end of the school year, Superintendent Paul Johnson is asking the community to weigh in on goals for the next three years.

“We’re doing what we call a refresh,” Johnson said.

Through about a dozen focus groups, an online survey for parents, and two upcoming town hall style meetings, the district is collecting input from the school community to craft a clear direction.

So far, the district has received more than 500 responses to the survey, Johnson said, and administrators are holding one town hall meeting on Monday, February 25 at 6 p.m. in the middle school library, and another on Tuesday, February 25 at 9 a.m. in the middle school conference room.

“It’s one thing to have an online survey,” Johnson said, “but we also want to make sure we have that face-to-face contact."

The four main goal areas of the current strategic plan, adopted in December 2010, include:

  • High Levels of Student Learning
  • Excellent Staff
  • Sound Finance and Infrastructure
  • Communication and Community Inclusion

The district has been very successful in meeting these goals, Johnson said. Mill Valley Middle School is one of the highest performing middle schools in the state, and students are no strangers to academic excellence awards.

With a growing enrollment, the district has been able to hire great new teachers and support staff, and the passage of Measure B has ensured that they, along with current programs, will remain, Johnson said. To help combat the current 2012-2013 school year deficit, teachers have also taken a “shared sacrifice” approach that included two furlough days – the last of which they took on February 15.

“I feel pretty good in our strategic planning, and that the community really supports the Mill Valley School District,” Johnson said. He’s looking forward to hearing what people have to say during the town hall meetings next week.

“Mill Valley is a very innovative place," he said, “so we’re looking for interesting perspectives for the future.”
