Kiddo! Raises $50K from Carnival, Memorial Day Bash

The and a raised more than $50,000 to support local educational programs, organizers said this week.

The events were a 30th anniversary celebration for , the local foundation that has supported art, music, drama, dance, poetry, technology and now physical education programs in the 's six schools since 1982. With the district facing an , in private funding to support those schools this year.

“All in all it was a great community event, a great fundraiser for our schools and a great way to celebrate Kiddo’s 30th anniversary,” said Trisha Garlock, the organization’s founder and executive director.

Garlock said final tallies are still pending but estimated that more than $30,000 was raised by the four-day Carnival on the ’s basketball courts. Kiddo! received a percentage of the gross revenue from the event, which was put on by Sacramento-based California Carnival Company. Jim Wickham, the local organizer of the Carnival, which had been on hiatus since 2004, estimated that more than 9,000 people attended the Carnival over the four days, with another 3,500 hitting the party and concert on the adjacent fields behind the .

Garlock said an additional nearly $20,000 came from the post-parade concert and party, which featured an array of food vendors. A number of local businesses and local organizations donated for the event, particularly the , whose owners fronted several thousand dollars to pay for the stage and musical acts as well as donating a portion of the proceeds from the Sweetwater food booth.

Wickham said organizers plan to hold the event again next year. But if they do, they’ll likely have to find a new location, as the school district is installing four new modular classrooms on its campus to accommodate booming enrollment.
