Greenwood Students Help Restore Miller Grove

Fourth and fifth graders at local school are removing invasive plants and restoring endemic species as part of community service project with an educational focus. Gary Yost's video explains the ongoing project.

Fourth and fifth graders at are getting an environmental education and restoring one of Mill Valley's most historic parklands at the same time. The students have been combining community service with the school's Nature/Environmental Studies (NEST) program by helping to restore Miller Grove (also known as Redwood Glen), which is located along the creek between Corte Madera and East Blithedale avenues.

Gary Yost has created this excellent video to explain the work, which involves eliminating invasive plants and restoring endemic species to the area. The video features Julie Hanft, Greenwood's NEST teacher, as well as city of Mill Valley Operations Manager Rick Misuraca and Betsy Bikle of Mill Valley Streamkeepers.

The students continue their work this winter as they work with volunteers at the Redwood Creek Plant Nursery at Muir Woods to cultivate additional native plants for the grove.
