“100 Years of Mill Valley’s Dipsea Race”

Speaker Barry Spitz, author and Dipsea Race historian

The idea for a Dipsea Race was created because of a bet between friends in 1904 and excluding a few missed years continues today. The starting point is at the train depot in downtown Mill Valley.  The Dipsea Trail is 7 miles long, and has 2,300 feet of very steep, often slippery, uphill and downhill terrain; through some of the most beautiful and challenging scenery in northern California and ending at Stinson Beach.

Celebrate the 101st running (June 12, 2011) of one of America’s oldest long-distance foot races and learn its colorful history, characters and course.  Barry has lead hikes and runs on the Dipsea Trail and in Marin County for over 35 years and will discuss his most recent book, “Dipsea, The Greatest Race:  Centennial Edition”.
