Take Action to Protect Edna, MVMS, and Other Mill Valley Schools

The Mill Valley School District is projecting a $700,000 deficit for the current school year and a $2.3 million deficit for the next school year. Our district enrolled 155 new students this year, but received NO ADDITIONAL FUNDING and only two new teachers were hired. At least 114 new students are expected to enroll in the 2012/13 school year.

In previous years, Mill Valley was insulated from school budget cuts because 95% of our revenue for education came from property taxes. Now, however, our schools--and our children-- are feeling the pain of decreasing property taxes, growing enrollment and cuts in state funding. To tackle these problems, the Mill Valley School District is looking at a three-pronged approach:

• Reducing the budget
• Shared sacrifice
• Tapping the budget reserve (for emergencies only)

At Edna Maguire and Mill Valley Middle School, we are already experiencing the following effects of the budget crisis:

• Increased student enrollment
• Bigger class sizes in all grades
• No hiring of additional staff to support this growth
• Decreased professional development for teachers
