Edna Maguire Fifth Graders March to Regional Spelling Bee

Three students are set to participate in the Southern Marin spelling bee in Sausalito Saturday in the hopes of advancing to the Marin County Spelling Bee Championship in November.

The minds of three fifth graders at are swimming in syllables and phonetics this week as they prepare for the Southern Marin Regional Spelling Bee.

Alexander Podesta, Mikaere Todd and Shanzeh Iqbal each qualified for the event – set for Saturday at Bayside Elementary in Sausalito at 3:30 p.m. – by winning the school competition.

If they place among the top 20 percent of the participants at the regional bee, the students advance to Marin County Spelling Bee Championship on November 5.

For now, the trio is studying the Marin County Office of Education’s list of nearly 700 Level I and II words they need to know for the next round, from acetylene and balustrade to subterfuge and taciturn.
