In Mill Valley, Obama Racks Up Five Times More in Donations Than Romney

Use Patch's database to find out how much your neighbors have given to the candidates.

Mill Valley voters have given more than five times the amount of money to President Barack Obama than Republican nominee Mitt Romney, according to data from Federal Elections Commission.

These most recent numbers—which run from April 1, 2011 through August 30, 2012—show Obama supporters in Mill Valley have given more than $508,000, while Romney supporters have given nearly $83,300.

Though Mill Valley voters gave significantly more money to the Obama campaign, it has been in smaller and more frequent increments. The records show that Obama received 2,190 donations at an average of $232, while Romney received 113 donations at an average of $718.

That doesn't mean Obama isn't racking up big donations, however. Obama has received 151 donations over $1,000, while Romney has received 37 donations over $1,000.

Marin is also deep Obama country, as the president has tallied more than $1.2 million in donations from Marin residents to date, far outpacing the $266,00 in donations to Romney from Marin to date. Mill Valley was the biggest donor to Obama in Marin, while Romney drew the most donations from San Rafael at more than $103,000.

If you’d like to find out who are some of Mill Valley's donors to the presidential election so far—or, if you’d like to see specifically if your neighbor gave to one of the candidates, you can use Patch's interactive database above. You can also use it see how the numbers break down in other parts of the state.

The information in the database was downloaded from the FEC’s website. The data is based on quarterly reports, and is current through August. The data will be updated in mid-October, and Patch will keep you posted with the new numbers as soon as they’re available.

Use the drop down menus on the map to explore how much your zip code contributed to Obama or Romney's campaign. Click on the zip code to see the total amount contributed. Smaller contributions might not show up on the map.

I think it's creepy that I could find out the names of my neighbors, how much they donated, and to whom. For big donors, maybe this kind of transparency is OK, but for everyone? I grew up in a time when there actually was something called privacy.

If you look at the data for Mill Valley, Obama actually received 50 times more donations ($488,000 vs $9,000), not 5 times more. Big difference.

Hi Francis - thanks for your comment. I just double checked the raw FEC data and our data in the story is accurate - $83,300 for Romney from 113 donors. Apologies if you're getting something different from the widget above - I'll take a look.

Knowing how much your neighbor donated is really creepy and unfair. I am happy to hear that people donate for their cause, but we do not have to know how much is being donated...None of our business.

Agree - creeeeepy. We should be looking out for our neighbors - not spying on them!
