Mill Valley Aquatics and Fitness Center to Close for Renovations

Construction will take place from August 17 – September 29 for improvements to the facility. The Community Center building will also be closed for annual maintenance from August 19 - 25.

After a decade of dedicated use, the Aquatics and Fitness facility in the Mill Valley Community Center will close for six weeks beginning in August for upgrades that will “ensure its longevity as a community recreation resource.”

“While the renovation will cause a short-term closure of the Aquatics and Fitness Center, the benefits of this project will be significant, including a much needed renovation of the pool and an improved overall recreation environment for the enjoyment of the community,” according to a press release from the city.

Construction will take place from August 17 – September 29.  Improvements include repairs to the retractable roof and walls; resurfacing of the pool deck, lobby and locker room floors; and waterslide maintenance, including improvements to the stairs and landings.  The pool and spa will receive an application of new plaster, and upstairs, the dance studio hardwood floor will be refinished.

The Community Center Building will also be closed for its traditional one-week annual maintenance from August 19 - August 25.  During this week, no programming will take place at the Community Center, but Recreation staff offices will remain open.

With a more stable economy, the Mill Valley City Council has been beefing up funds for capital improvement projects, and allocated $190,000 toward the Aquatics and Fitness Center improvements as part of final mid-year budget adjustments that members approved on Monday.

“We decided to do this during the summer?” Councilmember Ken Wachtel asked.

Due to the extensive plaster work needed to repair the pool and spa, Recreation Department staff scheduled the project during a period of traditionally warm weather in Mill Valley.

“The time needed for the plaster to dry is significantly shorter in the summer months, thus reducing the length of the closure period and lessening impacts to the community,” according to the release.

Councilmember Stephanie Moulton-Peters also pointed out that it more or less coincides with students going back to school on August 29.

During the repairs, the Community Center will continue to Spin, Yoga, Cardio Interval, Zumba, Step, Body Sculpt, Stroller Strides, Fit4Baby, and Pre and Post Natal exercise classes. Mill Valley Recreation has also negotiated a special discount pass for pool usage from the Strawberry Recreation District during the closure period.
