Free Holiday Parking Downtown Starts Today

Annual effort by City Hall and Chamber of Commerce to boost local holiday shopping allows people to park at metered spots for free for two hours until Jan. 1.

Starting today (Nov. 25) through Jan. 1, Mill Valley continues its decades-old tradition of making parking free throughout downtown from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day.

The move, approved by the Mill Valley City Council at its Nov. 7 meeting, is an annual campaign to spur downtown shopping during the holiday season. Meters are free for two hours, although time limits will still be enforced. The city estimates that it will lose more than $49,000 in revenue during the campaign, including $26,000 in lost meter revenue and $23,000 in lost parking ticket revenue.

The provided the decals for the campaign, which are installed on all parking meters to alert shoppers of the freebie.
