City Introduces New Traffic Calming Program

Mill Valley residents are invited to attend a meeting at the Mill Valley Community Center to learn more about the proposed Mill Valley neighborhood traffic calming program. Traffic Calming is intended to address "vehicular travel speeds, traffic volumes, and inappropriate driver behavior on residential streets in order to improve the safety and surroundings of residents, pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and students. This is achieved through a variety of education, enforcement, and/or engineering measures." Last year the City Council took action to establish a Citywide traffic calming program. Funds were authorized for consultant assistance and a "Traffic Calming Advisory Committee" was selected that included representatives from neighborhood associations, the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Safe Routes to School Committee, in addition to representatives from the City's Planning and Building, Public Works, Police and Fire Departments. The citizen members of the Committee are: Cathy Rosekrans, Vickie O'Reilly, David Griffis, Jan Austin and Susan Cluff. Over the course of this year, the Committee developed a comprehensive program and process that is set forth in the draft "Mill Valley Neighborhood Traffic Calming Guide" that is available for public review by clicking here

A one-page brochure summarizing the proposed program will also be available at City Hall, Mill Valley Library and the Public Safety Building on Hamilton Avenue.

The November 9 community meeting will be an opportunity to hear more about traffic calming, the elements of the proposed program and to comment on any aspect of the draft Guide. Following the community meeting, the draft Guide will be presented to the City Council for adoption. If you have any questions about traffic calming, the Guide or the upcoming meeting, please contact Mike Moore, Planning and Building Director at 415-388-4033, or by e-mail at mmoore@cityofmillvalley.org.
