County to Dedicate New Wright Exhibit to McGlashan

"Marin & the Realm of Frank Lloyd Wright" opening coincides with the one-year anniversary of his untimely passing of Mill Valley resident and Marin County Supervisor.

A new Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit at the Marin Civic Center will be dedicated to on Tuesday in conjunction with the of his untimely passing.

County officials said this week that the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center Conservancy will be dedicating newly created exhibit space adjacent to the Civic Centers cafeteria to McGlashan, who died at the age of 49 on March 27, 2011. McGlashan's widow Carol Misseldine and other members of his family, as well as County staff, are expected to attend the ceremony at 9 a.m.

The opening exhibit, "Marin & the Realm of Frank Lloyd Wright," which was curated by County Librarian Laurie Thompson, tells the story of the design and construction of the Civic Center Administration & Hall of Justice Buildings. It features historical photographs, ephemera, documents and artifacts from the Marin County Free Library's Anne T. Kent California Room.

The main exhibit is complemented by two smaller ones: "Frank Lloyd Wright: In the Realm of Ideas” and "Homes & Buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in California & Beyond.”

The space, formerly the gift shop adjacent to the cafeteria, was closed 2 years ago due to budget cutbacks. The Conservancy suggested that the space be reopened. McGlashan, long an admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright, and who succeeded Supervisor Annette Rose as the Board-appointed representative to the Conservancy, requested that it be open permanently and available to the public during café hours, and secured funding support for the remodeling.

A plaque dedicating the space to McGlashan says in part, “this space is dedicated in honor of his commitment to preserving Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy and a shared vision of open government”.

The project was a collaborative effort led by County Architect David Vaughn, Librarian Laurie Thompson, David Speer from the County Administrator’s office, Building Maintenance staff led by Mike Norton and local contractor Dean Garcia of B&G Glass.

The exhibit will not be staffed but is open to the public as a self-guided-tour during the hours the cafeteria is open, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
