County Hosts McGlashan Memorial Saturday

Service starts at 10:30 a.m. for Marin County supervisor who died of a heart attack March 27 after skiing.

A public memorial service is scheduled Saturday morning for former Marin County Supervisor and Mill Valley resident Charles McGlashan, who  at age 49 while on a ski outing at Northstar in Truckee.

The celebration of his life is at the Marin Center Veterans Memorial Auditorium at 10 Avenue of the Flags in San Rafael. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. and the program will start at 11 a.m. Reserved seating will be available only for members of McGlashan's family.

McGlashan, a Mill Valley resident, was a member of the board of directors of the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District and the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway
and Transportation District.

He was the driving force behind the creation of the Marin Energy Authority, a joint powers authority consisting of the county of Marin and seven Marin municipalities, including Mill Valley. In May 2010, the authority launched its , which took advantage of a state law passed in 2002 that allows cities and counties to purchase or generate their own electricity and sell it to customers.

The two districts joined the Marin County Board of Supervisors in paying tribute to McGlashan at their meetings since his death.

McGlashan also championed an ordinance to  at local markets and place a fee on paper bags, a move that drew widespread praise from local environmentalists and also a .

In lieu of flowers, McGlashan's family has asked that donations in his memory be made to WildCare, the , Green Sangha and the Marin Economic Forum.
