Coming Today, U.S. Census Data About Mill Valley

The U.S. Census Bureau releases data about California cities this afternoon.

Stay tuned: California communities gain a more detailed look at how they've grown in the past decade, when the U.S. Census Bureau issues results from the 2010 count later this afternoon.

The data — divided by census blocks, voting districts, cities, counties and school districts — includes information on population, race, ethnicity and voting age.

In December, the Bureau released state population information used to determine the redistricting of state representation in national government.

In 2010, eight states gained congressional seats, but for the first time since 1920 California wasn't one of them — due to inordinately slow population growth over the last decade. California's population was 37.25 million in 2010, an almost 10 percent population increase since 2000, and right on par with the country's 9.7 percent population growth. So, California retains its 53 seats in the House of Representatives.

In Mill Valley, preliminary estimates place the 2009 population at 13,404 residents — down about 1.6 percent from the 2000 census, when the population count was 13,620. According to the estimates, Mill Valley experienced a decrease in population from 2000 through 2006, and has been slowly on the rise since 2006. Out of 481 California cities ranked by population growth, preliminary data places Mill Valley at No. 332 and San Rafael at No. 145. San Anselmo ranked in at No. 346, with Fairfax at No. 403, Larkspur at No. 348, Corte Madera at No. 375, Tiburon at No. 378, Belvedere at No. 451 and Ross at No. 449.
