An armed man wanted in connection with fatally stabbing a woman in Marin City late Friday night is in the hospital this morning after a U.S. Park Police officer shot him in San Francisco's Marina district, according to a lieutenant with the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

At about 11:10 p.m. on Friday, sheriff's deputies received a request for a welfare check at a residence on Cole Drive, near Drake Avenue, according to Lt. Jamie Scardina.

A person who lives at the residence had returned home to find the front living room of the residence completely covered in blood. The resident left the apartment and went to a neighbor's home to call 911, Scardina said.

Deputies entered the residence and found a woman in a bedroom with multiple stab wounds. Despite CPR efforts, the 44-year-old woman was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at the scene, according to Scardina.

Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol received a report of male covered in blood and in possession of a knife boarding a Golden Gate Transit bus. He boarded the San Francisco-bound bus at the Donahue Street bus stop in Marin City, Scardina said.

The bus continued traveling on U.S. Highway 101 to San Francisco, where U.S. Park Police located the bus at Fillmore and Chestnut streets.

At about 11:15 p.m., U.S. Park Police officers located the suspect as he was getting off the bus, Scardina said.

He threatened the officers with a knife and the officers fired their weapons, striking him several times.

The suspect was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where he is being treated for multiple gun shot wounds.  He is in serious, but stable condition this morning, Scardina said.

Detectives from the Marin County Sheriff's Office responded to San Francisco and determined the suspect was the man responsible for fatally stabbing the woman in Marin City.

The relationship between the suspect and the victim remains under investigation, as does the motive for the shooting, according to deputies.

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact sheriff's deputies at (415) 479-2311 or may do so anonymously at (800) 222-8477.
