The Unrelenting Rash of Bike Thefts Continues in Mill Valley

This week's roundup of police activities includes noise complaints, car burglaries and some vandalism. But it mostly features the steady drumbeat of bikes being stolen from all over town.

Bike thefts are nothing new to Mill Valley. With a high number of pricey bikes per capita, it's simply a crime of opportunity. But while our weekly roundup of police activities seems to always include a few thefts, we have even more than usual this week.

June 25

8:40 p.m. – Someone smashed the rear passenger’s side window of a red Dodge Journey parked at Piatti restaurant, stealing a backpack with an iPad and wallet inside.

June 26

1:24 p.m. – A worker at a construction site on Gomez Way was playing music on the radio too loudly, according to a resident in the area. Police determined that the music was not that loud but the worker agreed to lower the volume to appease.

2:48 p.m. – A bright red Cannondale mountain bike was stolen from outside the Rite Aid on East Blithedale Avenue. The bike was locked and the lock was gone as well, according to the report. The bike has “Ride Life, Ride Long” and “Forward Motion Sports” stickers on it. The bike was valued at $700. Police took a report.

3:08 p.m. – The owner of Mama’s Royal Café reported that the restaurant’s front window was struck by an unknown object, putting a hole in the glass. Police determined that it didn’t appear to be a projectile. There was no suspect information or any surveillance video available.

June 27

12:33 a.m. – A resident of Eton Way called police to complaint about a loud party at a neighbor’s house. The party-goers agreed to keep the noise down.

12:58 p.m. – A resident of the 500 block of East Blithedale Ave. reported that he had been notified of a number of incidents of fraud, including attempts to open 14 accounts under his name, including two that were successful, with charges of less than $500 at Kohl’s and Target.

1:41 p.m. – Police received a report that a green ZForce BMX-style bike was stolen from outside the CVS pharmacy on East Blithedale Avenue. The bike was not locked.

10:04 p.m. – A resident of the 300 block of East Blithedale Ave. reported that teenaged girls were running around the playground at Boyle Park and yelling and having fun, keeping his children awake.

June 28

6:30 a.m. – A resident of Mountain View Ave. reported that his girlfriend’s car was broken into outside the home overnight, with the burglar smashing a car window and stealing a red Speedo swim bag.

11:26 a.m. – A resident of Miller Ave. reported that she lost a check in Rohnert Park and that the person who found it used the bank routing number on the check to obtain additional checks in her name via Chase Bank.

2:03 p.m. – At least three teens in a silver, four-door hatchback threw eggs at a home on Upperhill Rd., according to a report.

6:02 p.m. – A black Santa Cruz “Tall Boy” mountain biked valued at $6,000 was stolen from outside the Whole Foods Market on East Blithedale Ave., according to a report. The bike had a Tam Bikes sticker on it. It was locked and the lock had been cut.

June 29

1:15 a.m. – Police received a report that six peopled were drinking, being loud and breaking things in the parking lot behind Joe’s Taco Lounge.

10:37 a.m. – Someone stole a radar detector, FasTrak sensor and some change from an unlocked 2008 black Infiniti SX parked on Quarry Road.

11:17 p.m. – Police received a complaint about people being loud at a party in the 300 block of Vista Linda Drive. Police advised the residents of the complaint and the party was broken up.

June 30

9:38 a.m. – Police were called to a home on Eton Way on a report that a woman was making announcements via a public address system. The resident agreed to stop making announcements on the PA.

6:08 p.m. – A man called police to report that his black Specialized Roubaix road bike was stolen from the bike atop his friend’s Audi SUV parked at the Depot Plaza. The bike was locked onto the rack and the lock was cut. The theft occurred within the past 30 minutes, according to the report.
