Take a Bike, Leave a Bike

Thief makes sure he doesn't leave resident without wheels, along with stolen iPhones and identity thieves highlight this week's roundup of police activities.

Feb. 7

2:34 p.m. – A resident called police to report seeing a car swerving and cutting off other vehicles on East Bithedale Ave. The resident said the driver parked her car in the Whole Foods parking lot and was yelling at no one. Police did not locate the vehicle.

1:12 p.m. – A woman reported that her purse was stolen out of her shopping cart at Whole Foods on Miller Avenue. She was unable to provide a description of the suspect. Several credit cards, a cell phone and $200 in cash were inside the purse, she said. The credit cards were used shortly thereafter at a Chevron gas station and Orchard Supply Hardware in San Rafael.

7:03 p.m. – A resident reported that two iPhones were taken from her daughter’s backpack at Tam High today. The caller was unable to provide police with the serial numbers for the phones, and GPS tracking was not activated on the phones. The phones were valued at more than $800.

8:38 p.m. – A police officer spotted a black Volkswagen SUV swerving on Hwy. 101 and continuing to do so on Shoreline Hwy. and Almonte Blvd. The officer pulled over the car and arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, an outstanding warrant and a probation violation.

Feb. 9

10:27 a.m. – The owner of a vacant home on Sycamore Ave. called police to report that he found “evidence of gun shots” in the house. He did not know when the shots could have been fired. Police are investigating.

10:46 a.m. – A 15-year-old student at Tam High was detained and cited on suspicion that he stole an iPhone and an iPod from backpack in the weight room at school. 

Feb. 10

12:48 p.m. – A resident of Roque Moraes Ct. reported that his Specialized road bike was stolen from his carport. The bicycle lock had been cut, the man reported. The suspect left another bike at the scene. Police took that bike as evidence. The stolen bike was valued at $350.

12:20 p.m. – A resident of Alta Vista Ave. reported that his parents’ mailbox was hit by a car, with a tire track around the mailbox and a damaged Toyota Highlander still parked nearby. The mailbox was broken off at the base of the post. Police are investigating.

1:34 p.m. – An 87-year-old man driving on Tamalpais Avenue hit a tree, sustaining a bloody lip and minor injuries.  

2:06 p.m. – A resident of Vasco Drive told police that she received a call from a credit card company because a person had attempted to open an account using her husband’s name and several pieces of personal information.

4:28 p.m. – A resident of Lovell Ave. who had her purse stolen in Santa Cruz reported that she was the victim of identity theft, as someone had obtained a debit card that she’d forgotten was in the stolen purse. 

9:17 p.m. – A resident of Marlin Ave. reported that her home had been burglarized. Jewelry was taken from the home, the woman told police.

Feb. 11

10:30 a.m. – A resident of Park Terrace reported that his bike and bike trailer were stolen from outside his home right by the front door. The man told police that his front door is not visible from the street, so the thief must have known that the bike and trailer were there.

Feb. 12

9:24 p.m. – A resident of Beverly Terrace reported that his Audemer Piguet Swiss watch worth several thousand dollars was taken from his home. The man told police that several people had access to his home at the time the theft occurred but he didn’t have any suspects in mind.
