Struck Fire Hydrant Bursts Open on Miller Ave.

The fountain-like spray shot high into the air after a driver allegedly hit the hydrant and fled the scene.

Police are searching for a driver who struck a fire hydrant on Miller Ave., causing gallons of water to shoot into the air around 1:30 p.m.

“A car struck it and fled the scene,” said Mill Valley Fire Capt. Darrin Allen.

Firefighters were on the scene within two minutes and closed down one lane of Miller to turn the water off within three minutes.  It occurred at 515 Miller, across the street from Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Marin Muncipal District is working to repair the hydrant, Allen said. The hydrant spews between 1,000 to 1,500 gallons of water a minute, and Allen said the scene was unusual.

That’s pretty normal, especially on the flats where the water is all gravity fed,” he said. “There’s a lot of pressure behind those hydrants, so a lot of water comes out when they’re sheared off like that.”
