Sheriff's Office: Mom, Home With Daughter, Scares Off Burglars Inside Home Near Mill Valley

By Renee Schiavone and Bay City News Service

Would-be burglars fled from a home in unincorporated Mill Valley Saturday morning when a resident in the house interrupted the break-in, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

A mother and her 10-year-old daughter were awakened around 9:30 a.m. when they heard sounds coming from inside the house in the 200 block of Reed Boulevard, sheriff's officials said.

According to Lt. Doug Pittman, the mother called 911 and said she was home alone with her daughter when she heard someone knocking on the front door. She went to go answer the door, but she heard another noise downstairs and heard someone going out her front door, he said.

"She looked out the front window of her home and saw what she described as a silver colored newer model SUV with a round emblem on the back driving away from the area," Pittman said.  "The mother then ran back upstairs to call 911 and to stay by her daughter’s side until Sheriff’s deputies arrived."

Sheriff's deputies responded shortly thereafter, and searched the area for the suspects or vehicle, but did not find anyone.  In their search, they discovered that a rear back door had been pried open to get into the house.

An investigation into the attempted burglary is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Marin County Sheriff's Office investigations unit at (415) 473-7265 or Bay Area Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
