More Than $1,700 Stolen from Homestead Valley Community Center

Theft occurred in late June, with cash and checks taken from inside the center's temporary office in the parking lot to accommodate its ongoing renovation.

Someone stole more than $1,700 in checks and cash from the temporary office of the Homestead Valley Community Center late last month, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

The theft was reported Tuesday, July 9, by Les Lizama, the center’s executive director. Lizama said the portable trailer containing the center’s office during its renovation was locked at the time of the theft, which occurred sometime over a 36-hour period between June 26 and 28, Lizama said.

Lizama said there was no sign of forced entry and nothing appeared amiss.

“Not even a pencil was moved,” he said. “We have no leads whatsoever.”

The community center is in the midst of a $1.2 million makeover this year, mostly on the footprint of the building itself.

The pool has remained open during the construction, and the center’s two largest annual programs – the swimming program and the summer day camp, are operating normally.

To pay for the renovation of the community center, the county used 14.5 years of Measure A revenue as collateral to secure a $900,000 loan. The county also kicked in an additional $150,000 from its General Fund to pay for accessibility improvements around the center.
