Mill Valley Reminds Residents: Pull to the Right for Lights, Sirens

In a new public service announcement, the city's police and fire departments want to get the word out about the importance of pulling to the side of the road for emergency vehicles.

The city of Mill Valley Thursday released a PSA urging drivers to make sure they're always aware of approaching emergency vehicles-- and to make way for them.

"Pull to the Right for Lights and Sirens," the message states.  "In an emergency situation help should arrive as quickly as possible. Everyone can do their part by pulling to the right for lights and sirens! Many people panic or simply do not know or adhere to the rules of the road when emergency vehicles are approaching."

The city even put together a YouTube video, which can be seen at the top of this article, which shows a lights and siren response from the firefighters perspective.   In it-- a school bus can be seen pulling in front of the driver, despite the emergency lights.

Here's more from the Mill Valley alert:

California Vehicle Code Section 21806--Authorized Emergency Vehicles states upon the immediate approach of an  emergency vehicle which is sounding a siren:

  • Drivers shall yield the right-of-way and immediately drive to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway, clear intersection, stop and remain stopped until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.
  • A person driving a vehicle in an exclusive or preferential use lane shall exit that lane immediately upon determining that the exit can be accomplished with reasonable safety.
  • This also applies to all pedestrians in the roadway to proceed to the nearest curb or place of safety and remain there until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.

Failure to do so can cause serious accidents, delays to first responders and an expensive citation.
