Mill Valley Police Sergeant Steve Gutsch Dies at 43

Eight-year department veteran dies unexpectedly Saturday at his home in Sonoma County; cause is unknown at this time.

Mill Valley Police Sgt. Steven Gutsch died Saturday at his home in Sonoma County. He was 43.

Police Chief Angel Bernal said the cause of death is unknown and is being determined by the Sonoma County coroner’s office.

Gutsch, who joined the department in April 2003, was promoted to sergeant last December. He supervised a patrol team and the department’s field training officer program.

"The untimely loss of Sergeant Gutsch will be felt by all of us for a long time to come,” Bernal said in a statement. “We are thankful for his service to our community and will honor his memory by trying to live up to the examples he set."

Gutsch is survived by his wife Susan, his 18-year-old son Hayden, his 11-year-old daughter Jordan Gutsch, his 21-year-old step-son Alex Raabe and his 13-year-old step-daughter Amanda Davis.

A fund has been established for Gutsch's family through the Mill Valley Police Officer's Association to assist the family. Donations can be mailed to the Mill Valley Police Officer's Association, 1 Hamilton Drive, Mill Valley, CA 94941.

A memorial service is set for Saturday, July 16 at 10 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Avenue in Santa Rosa.
