Mill Valley House Fire Causes $150K in Damages, Fire Officials Say

By Bay City News Service:

A 2-alarm fire caused extensive smoke damage to a Mill Valley home late Thursday afternoon, a fire battalion chief said.

The owner of the 3-story, hillside home at 117 Country Club Drive noticed what he thought was steam from a dryer vent when he returned home around 5:15 p.m., Mill Valley Fire Department Chief Michael St. John said.

When the homeowner realized it was smoke he called the fire department, and crews were at the scene at 5:24 p.m., St. John said.

The fire started in a computer workstation area in or near the kitchen on the third floor, but the cause is undetermined, St. John said.

The first two engine companies knocked down the fire within 10 minutes. Firefighters did extensive overhaul and salvage, but the blaze caused damage estimated at $150,000, St. John said.

The residents were displaced because of smoke damage throughout the main living area on the third floor, St. John said.

Firefighters from Mill Valley, Tiburon, the Southern Marin Fire Department and the Marin County Fire Department responded to the blaze.

The fire was challenging because the house was located on a one-lane street with no turn around area, St. John said.
