Marin City Teen Arrested with Handgun Reported Stolen from Tam Valley Home

Marin County Sheriff's officials say they responded to a report of shots fired Thursday night and found a 17-year-old resident with a semi-automatic handgun that was later traced to a residential burglary.

A Marin City teen was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of possessing a semi-automatic handgun that had been reported stolen from a home in Tam Valley, authorities said.

Marin County Sheriff's deputies went to Cole Drive and Drake Avenue in Marin City at around 10 p.m. on reports that shots had been fired in the area, according to Sheriff's Sgt. Craig Scardina.

When they arrived, a deputy approached a 17-year-old resident who "became uncooperative with the deputy during the investigation," Scardina said.

A brief struggle followed and the juvenile was eventually arrested, and the deputy found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the waistband of the teen’s pants, he said.

Investigators traced that handgun back to a residential burglary that occured last week in Tam Valley in which a backpack and an iPod were also stolen, Scardina said. He declined to provide further details on the location of the burglary because it is still being investigated.
