Mill Valley Man Pleads 'No Contest' to Trying to Throw Wife Off San Mateo-Hayward Bridge

A Mill Valley man who prosecutors say tried to throw his wife off of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge during an argument in December pleaded no contest on Thursday to a domestic violence charge, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office. 

Xavier Jarrell McClinton, 48, pleaded no contest in San Mateo County Superior Court to felony domestic violence with an enhancement for infliction of great bodily injury and a serious felony allegation, prosecutors said. 

The plea was made in return for an agreed-upon maximum sentence of seven years in state prison, prosecutors said. McClinton's sentencing is scheduled for May 16. 

McClinton was driving east on state Highway 92 with his wife on Dec. 13 when the couple began to argue inside their white Honda Pilot, according to the district attorney's office. 

The vehicle began to swerve and crashed into the guardrail. Witnesses then saw McClinton get out of the car, drag his wife out of the car and attempt to throw her over the side of the bridge, prosecutors said. 

She was saved by motorists who got out of their cars to help and McClinton fell around 15 feet into the Bay during the struggle. 

He was arrested after being rescued by Alameda County fire officials. 

McClinton's wife testified at his preliminary hearing that after a visit to Tiburon that morning, he began to make paranoid statements about the cars around them and appeared agitated. 

She and McClinton live together with her mother and their three children in Mill Valley and share a Corte Madera fitness center called "Body By X."
