A California Highway Patrol helicopter and personnel from a number of Marin emergency agencies rescued an injured hiker along the Cataract Trail on Mount Tamalpais on Sunday evening.

Marin County fire crews, joined by Ross Valley Fire crews and rangers from the Marin Municipal Water District and the Marin County Open Space District, requested the CHP's assistance in rescuing a 26-year-old woman from New York who had fallen and broken her leg while hiking on the mountain around 5:45 p.m., a CHP spokesman said.

The rescue occurred on the Cataract Trail southwest of Fairfax, between the bottom of the trail and Laurel Dell, according to Ross Valley Fire Capt. Gavin Illingworth.

Fighting strong winds, the helicopter crew, with assistance from fire personnel who had trekked to the woman's location, conducted a hoist rescue, lifting her up past large redwood trees to the aircraft, according to the CHP.

The helicopter brought the woman to a waiting ambulance.
