Fire Tears Through Two Vehicles and a Carport Sunday Afternoon (VIDEO)

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 10 minutes, but it destroyed a Subaru Outback and a Jaguar and caused about $100,000 worth of damage.

A fire that broke out in a carport at 85 Sycamore Ave. Sunday afternoon burned through the structure and two vehicles, but firefighters had it under control in about 10 minutes.

“There were some pretty good sized flames,” said Mill Valley Fire Capt. Bill Schardt. “It was definitely going.”

The garage, along with a Subaru Outback and a Jaguar, were destroyed, and the fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage, he said. It was contained to the carport and didn’t spread to any other structures, including the unattached home. A resident was in the back of the house, and was alerted to the fire by a neighbor. There were no injuries.

“The main house was not threatened,” Schardt said.

A young girl across the street called in the blaze. She called first for her grandmother, but her grandmother was busy so she called 911, Schardt said.

The fire also produced a column of thick, black smoke that was visible for about a mile, and most likely caused by petroleum products in the garage, he said. Firefighters weren’t able to determine the seriousness of the fire until they arrived on the scene.

“It was knocked down quickly,” Schardt said, “but it could have certainly spread have there been different conditions or if the person didn’t call it in so quickly.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It’s not considered suspicious.
