Fire Causes $60K in Damage to Evo Spa in Strawberry Village Shopping Center

Early morning fire was mostly confined to spa's laundry room but also caused minor smoke damage to Sushi Gourmet restaurant next door.

An early morning fire caused an estimated $60,000 in damage to the Evo Spa in the Strawberry Village shopping center early Monday morning, shutting down the decades-old business and causing minor damage to the sushi restaurant next door, Southern Marin Fire officials said.

The fire at 800 Redwood Highway's suite 200 was first reported at 3:30 a.m. Monday, with Southern Marin Fire crews from up the hill on Reed Blvd. on scene a few minutes later, Southern Marin Fire Chief Jim Irving said. Firefighters found a space that was "fully charged with smoke on the interior" when they arrived, Irving said.

Irving said the damage was mostly centered on the spa's laundry room and that there was heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the business. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes, he said.

Irving said the cause of the fire is under investigation but that it does not appear to be suspicious. Damage was estimated at $50,000 to $60,000, and there was minor damage to Sushi Gourmet restaurant next door.

Southern Marin Fire, Mill Valley Fire, Tiburon, San Rafael and Main County Fire all sent personnel to the scene. No one was injured in the incident.
