CHP Announces DUI Arrests Down, Fatalities Up on Memorial Day Weekend

By Bay City News Service

Fatal collisions in the Bay Area are up, but DUI arrests are down from last year, according to the California Highway Patrol.

In a report provided by the CHP over the Memorial Day weekend from Friday through Sunday morning, officers in the Bay Area made 117 arrests, the CHP said. A year ago, 136 arrests were made, according to the CHP. Two accidents in the Bay Area were fatal, the CHP said. A year ago, just one crash was fatal.

Statewide, there were 826 arrests made by the CHP for driving under the influence, the CHP said. That number is down from 845 DUI drivers arrested in 2012. Across the state, fatalities are up from five in 2012 to 12 this year.
