California Highway Patrol to Crack Down on Motorcyclists Today

The CHP has received complaints about riders crossing over double yellow lines, driving at excessive speed, pulling stunts and passing unsafely into oncoming traffic.

The California Highway Patrol will be out in force on state Highway 1 in Marin County this Sunday in response to increased complaints about speeding motorcyclists and packs of bicyclists.

The "Sunday Morning Ride" is a longstanding tradition among motorcyclists, who often ride from Tam Junction to Point Reyes in large groups, according to Sgt. Marcus Bartholomew.

"While many people came out to enjoy the technical aspects of riding the curves and twists of SR-1, there are some groups who make the ride a race between the two points," Bartholomew said in a statement.

There have also been complaints about packs of bicyclists who fail to stop at stop signs and impede traffic by riding with multiple bicyclists across the roadway.

"We want people to come to the coast and enjoy themselves, but not at the risk of their safety or the safety of other people," Bartholomew said.

The CHP plans to increase the amount of officers on the route and use departmental aircraft to spot violations and assist with tracking high speeds and reckless drivers, Bartholomew said.
