Burglars Steal Five Bikes from Tam Commons Storage Kiosk

In at least two separate incidents, bike locks on all five bikes were cut – stolen bikes were valued at more than $5,000.

Burglars struck an outdoor storage area at the Tamalpais Commons complex on Miller Ave. at least twice last week, stealing five bikes valued at more than $5,000, Mill Valley Police said.

The first incident was reported last Tuesday at around 9 a.m., when a resident of the apartments at 505 Miller Ave. reported that two mountain bikes were stolen from the storage area, which is shared by tenants and is not locked. The bikes were locked to the kiosk, however, and those cable licks had been cut, according to Mill Valley Police Sgt. Paul Wrapp.

Police received a call three days later (March 15) at around 9 a.m. from another Tam Commons resident who reported that a $1,200 women’s bicycle was stolen from the kiosk at the complex. The resident said the bike was a lime green 21-speed Bianchi and had been entered into the Automated Property System (APS), which is the nationwide listing of stolen property.

That same resident called police again on Saturday, March 16, to report that other bicycles had been stolen from the kiosk. The first, a Cannondale men’s road bike valued at $1,300, was stolen on March 11, according to the resident, while the second, a Santa Cruz Juliana mountain bike valued at $1,930, was taken on Thursday, March 14.

Wrapp said police have no suspects at this time. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Mill Valley Police Department via an anonymous tip line at 415-721-4547.

Tam Commons is a mixed-use development that debuted in 2010. It includes 12 units on the second and third floors above the streetfront commercial space that includes ToyHouse, Yolo Yogurt Lounge and the now-vacant space formerly occupied by Dish restaurant and Hawk’s Tavern.

“We provide the storage huts as a service to our tenants,” said Mike House, the co-owner of the complex. “This is the first time anything like this has happened.”
